What a matrix actually is

A grid: staff down the side, mandatory courses across the top, and a colour in every cell — green (in date), amber (expiring soon), red (overdue or missing). Add a home-level compliance score at the top and you have the one artefact that tells a manager, a head office and an inspector the same story at a glance.

The mandatory list is yours to define — then enforce

Which courses are "mandatory" depends on your service and roles: safeguarding, moving and handling, fire safety, first aid, infection control and medication competency appear on most lists, alongside induction standards for new starters. What matters operationally is that your list — the one your policies and commissioners require — is the one the matrix enforces, with per-course validity periods driving the colours.

The reason homes stay on the failing spreadsheet is migration dread.
